A Child’s Life Ended in Seconds

Russian aircraft struck a residential block in Kharkiv on 30 October 2024, killing 11-year-old Mark Matyash-Myrnyi and injuring at least a dozen others. Rescuers pulled the sixth-grader from the rubble with severe head trauma and multiple fractures. Despite more than thirty minutes of CPR, doctors could not revive him.

From Birthday Candles to Bomb Shelters

Born and raised in Kharkiv, Mark had celebrated his eleventh birthday only seven weeks earlier. He was a popular sixth-grade pupil at Gymnasium 111, known for surprising teachers and friends with handmade gifts. Classmates recall his infectious smile and habit of calling himself a “pro e-sports player in training.”

A Family’s Joy Now an Open Wound

Mark’s parents, Volodymyr and Tetiana, say their son “glowed with happiness” each time the family returned to their war-scarred city after temporary evacuations. “He promised he would grow up, earn big money from gaming tournaments, and spoil his mom,” Volodymyr told reporters, fighting back tears. Tetiana added that fishing trips and weekend saunas with his father filled the boy with stories “far beyond his years.”

Dreams That Will Never Be

Mark loved animals and convinced his parents to promise him a Labrador puppy when the fighting calmed. The family now plans to honor that promise by adopting a rescue dog in their son’s memory. “He was the light of our lives,” Tetiana said. “For others this may read as another tragic headline; for us it is the loss of our entire world.”

Civilian Toll Keeps Rising

Kharkiv regional officials report that more than 20 children have been killed in aerial or missile attacks on the city since the invasion began in February 2022. Rights groups warn that the increasing use of so-called “glide bombs” and long-range missiles places every neighborhood within reach, regardless of its military value.
