Family inside as blast tears through Sudakov’s apartment

Ukraine international Georgiy Sudakov said his family narrowly escaped harm after a Russian drone strike struck his residential building in Kyiv overnight. The 23-year-old midfielder wrote on Instagram that his wife Yelyzaveta, their three-year-old daughter Milana and his mother were inside the apartment when the blast ripped through the block.

“This is what my home looks like after tonight,” Sudakov posted alongside videos showing collapsed walls, water pooling in corridors and rooms filled with rubble. “A drone came. My wife, child and mother were at home.” He added that some would “write that there was military equipment in my apartment,” pushing back at any suggestion the building was a legitimate military target.

Footage shows heavy damage; fire on roof and cars crushed

Clips shared by the player depict buckled doorframes, shattered masonry and a charred roofline where a fire reportedly broke out following the impact. Vehicles parked around the building appeared to be buried under debris. Sudakov did not say whether his family sustained injuries; local officials had yet to publish a full accounting specific to the address at the time of writing.

Kyiv under barrage: four killed, dozens wounded

Ukraine’s Air Force said Kyiv was among several targets hit during a large-scale overnight assault that left four people dead and 44 wounded across affected areas. According to the same statement, Russian forces launched 805 drones and 13 missiles in the wave of attacks. Emergency crews worked through the morning to extinguish fires and secure damaged structures in the capital and beyond.

The strike underscores the risk to civilians as Russia’s long-range campaign continues to target urban centers and energy or logistics infrastructure. Residential buildings in Kyiv have repeatedly absorbed the force of falling debris and direct hits during previous barrages, prompting city authorities to renew calls for reinforced shelters and sustained air-defense support.

From Shakhtar to Benfica on loan: a career on the rise

A product of Shakhtar Donetsk’s academy, Sudakov has been one of Ukrainian football’s standout young talents. Since breaking into Shakhtar’s senior squad, he has won two league titles and two Ukrainian Cups, earning a move this season to Benfica on loan. For the Ukraine national team, he has collected 30 caps and scored three goals since his 2021 debut.

Sudakov recently featured in Ukraine’s 2–0 defeat to France in a match played in Poland, part of a schedule that has often seen the national side take its “home” fixtures abroad due to security risks. His prominence on the pitch has made him one of the most recognizable faces of a generation of Ukrainian players whose careers—and families—have been reshaped by war.

A reminder of the human stakes

While military analysts focus on inventories, interception rates and strike patterns, incidents like Monday’s blast illustrate the enduring human cost of the conflict. A sporting figure accustomed to tightly marked midfields instead found his personal life upended by the realities of a modern air war. That his family was at home when the drone struck—and survived—drove a wave of concern and solidarity from supporters and fellow professionals.

Authorities cautioned residents to heed air-raid alerts and use shelters where available, noting that falling debris from intercepted objects can be as lethal as direct hits. Investigations into the strike’s trajectory and damage assessment were ongoing.
