Drone Strike Claims Life of 17-Year-Old Culinary Student and Her Parents

On March 21, 2025, a Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia ended the life of 17-year-old Ulyana-Khrystyna Malenko. The deadly strike hit her family’s residential building, killing her and both of her parents.

The tragedy unfolded when a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle targeted the building where Ulyana lived with her mother and father. It was not a military facility, but an ordinary home—one of many in a densely populated area. The explosion destroyed their apartment and shattered the future of a vibrant, hardworking teenager whose life had only just begun.

A Young Woman with Dreams, Silenced Too Soon

Born and raised in Zaporizhzhia, Ulyana-Khrystyna graduated from School No. 76 and pursued specialized secondary education at the Zaporizhzhia Vocational College of Hotel and Restaurant Business. She had recently earned her qualification as a chef and pastry maker.

She worked in food delivery and had recently taken on a job as an operator at the local restaurant “Lancelot.” Outside of work, she was known for her love of motorcycles. Among the biker community, she was affectionately nicknamed “Bantyk” (Bow) or “Kishechka” (Kitten).

“She loved riding motorcycles so much,” said her sister Viktoriya, recalling their shared passion. “We planned to go to the opening of the motorcycle season in April. The last time I spoke to her was Friday—it was a simple, warm conversation between two sisters who loved each other deeply. We were very close. Right before the strike, Ulya messaged me: ‘I’m really scared…’ That was the last message I got from her.”

Civilian Lives Still Under Fire

The drone strike that killed Ulyana-Khrystyna and her parents is one of the latest in a long line of Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. Despite repeated international condemnations and clear prohibitions under international humanitarian law, Russia continues its campaign of terror through indiscriminate bombings of homes, schools, and hospitals.

The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives, and young civilians like Ulyana are among its most heartbreaking losses. She was not on the front lines. She had no weapon in her hands. She was working, studying, dreaming. Now, her dreams are buried under the rubble of her destroyed home.

A Family Erased, a Sister Left Behind

The only immediate family member to survive the attack was her sister Viktoriya. Now left to carry the pain alone, she is determined to ensure Ulyana is not forgotten.

“She was full of life. She cooked like a pro and made people smile. She had plans, a future,” Viktoriya said. “All of it taken away by a drone.”

Ulyana-Khrystyna Malenko’s story joins a growing list of young Ukrainians who have become victims of Russia’s war of aggression. She is mourned not just by her family, but by a nation refusing to forget the cost of freedom.
