A Child’s Life Cut Short by a Missile Strike on His Hometown

On October 30, 2024, 11-year-old Mark Matiash-Myrnyi was killed in a Russian airstrike that struck a residential area in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Rescuers pulled the sixth-grade student from the rubble with severe head trauma and multiple fractures. Despite over 30 minutes of intense resuscitation efforts by medics, Mark could not be saved.

The attack, part of Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukrainian cities, turned a peaceful fall day into a nightmare for Mark’s family—and for an entire nation watching its future disappear under bombs.

A Bright and Loving Soul with Big Dreams

Mark had just celebrated his birthday in September in his native Kharkiv. He was a student at Gymnasium No. 111, where teachers and classmates remember him as kind-hearted, cheerful, and generous. He loved making gifts for his teachers and friends, and enjoyed live-streaming, playing online games, football, basketball, and dancing on TikTok.

“He would call himself a future e-sports champion. He used to say he’d grow up, earn lots of money, and make his mom proud,” said his parents, Volodymyr and Tetiana.

His father took him fishing and to the sauna—traditions that became sacred bonding moments for them both. “After every outing, he was bursting with excitement. He wanted to tell the whole world how great it was,” Tetiana recalled.

A Family’s Promise Left Unfulfilled

Mark adored animals. His parents had promised to buy him a Labrador puppy. That wish will now be fulfilled in a different way: “We’ll get the puppy in his name and take care of it with all the love he would’ve given,” his mother said.

“Mark was the light of our lives. A radiant beam of happiness. Now we’re left with a gaping black hole. Our hearts are torn apart,” Tetiana said through tears.

For the world, Mark may be one of many tragic stories. For his parents, he was everything.

Innocent Victims of an Indiscriminate War

Mark’s death is not an isolated incident—it is part of a brutal pattern. Civilian casualties, including children, have become daily headlines in Ukraine as Russian missiles and drones continue to target populated areas.

What future does a country have when its children become targets?

Mark is survived by his parents, two grandmothers, a grandfather, and extended family members. They will remember him as a boy who dreamed big, loved deeply, and lived brightly—even if only for 11 short years.
