MARTYRS NEVER DIE / ISTANBUL, TURKEY

A Life of Service and Determination

On September 22, 2024, Police Officer Şeyda Yılmaz lost her life in Istanbul during a duty-related armed attack, leaving behind a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to her country. Born in Sivas, Yılmaz grew up with a dream that never wavered: to become a police officer and, if necessary, to give her life in service. Friends and family recall her repeating from a young age that she would either serve as a soldier or a police officer—and that martyrdom was her destiny.

Her determination was evident throughout her education. Despite initial setbacks and even physical injury, she refused to abandon her dream of joining the police academy. With relentless perseverance, she succeeded, proving her resilience and strength to those around her.

Family Bonds and Unyielding Faith

Yılmaz’s family describes her as vibrant, cheerful, and full of energy. Her mother recalls, “She never woke up crying as a child—always smiling.” Her siblings speak of her as a source of inspiration, love, and strength. Despite hardships at home, including financial struggles and health challenges within the family, Yılmaz grew up with a strong sense of faith and responsibility.

Her husband, Semih, shared how they met while preparing for national exams and how their bond grew through shared study sessions, long conversations, and mutual encouragement. Even amid constant separations due to training, Yılmaz’s optimism never wavered. She often told him, “Let’s never go to bed angry. Whatever the problem, we solve it by talking.”

The Short but Bright Career

Once appointed, Yılmaz served in İzmir at the Migration Department before requesting to reunite with her husband in Istanbul. Known among colleagues as “the lioness” for her strength and courage despite her small frame, she quickly gained the admiration of peers and superiors. She accepted every challenge with a sense of mission, reminding her family, “This is my duty. I must not give up.”

Her final assignment came before her probationary period was even completed. On that day, her last call to her mother ended with the promise that she would call again soon. Minutes later, tragedy struck.

The Pain of Loss, the Pride of Legacy

The loss devastated her family, but their words reflect both sorrow and pride. Her mother recounted the moment of receiving the news: “I had a flag in my drawer. That night, I hung it on the balcony. My daughter left me, but she made me a martyr’s mother.”

Her sister described her as “our delicate flower who turned out to be so brave.” Her husband, who continues to visit her resting place daily, said: “I am the spouse of a hero. I live to honor her name and to ensure her sacrifice is never forgotten.”

Even in grief, her family and loved ones stress that her story is not one of tragedy alone, but of profound devotion—to her family, her faith, and her nation.

A Symbol of National Sacrifice

The story of Officer Şeyda Yılmaz is more than personal loss; it represents the sacrifices made by countless men and women in uniform. Her memory is cherished not only by her loved ones but also by a community of supporters across Turkey and beyond. Calls, letters, and condolences poured in from abroad, with strangers expressing their grief and admiration.

For her mother, every day is a countdown until reunion in the hereafter. For her husband, every visit to her grave is both a farewell and a vow to remain strong. And for her nation, her name joins the eternal roll of those who gave their lives so that others may live in peace.
