ANKARA, TURKEY — The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is preparing for a comprehensive structural overhaul, specifically targeting provincial and district heads who have reportedly distanced themselves from the electorate during non-election periods.
According to reports compiled by party coordinators, the leadership is initiating a "mental preparation" phase for future elections. The primary objective of this impending revision is to re-establish a strong, grassroots connection with the public. The changes will not be limited to merely swapping names; rather, the party is aiming for a deeper and more fundamental transformation of its entire organizational structure across the country.
Performance reports to determine the changes
The main factors driving this reorganization process are the party's field performance and the level of direct contact established with voters, particularly following the disappointing results in the recent local elections. Party sources emphasize the beginning of a "new era," noting that detailed analytical reports have already been prepared concerning local officials who currently lack resonance with the public.
These evaluations encompass various criteria, including overall performance, the effectiveness of field campaigns, and the ability to maintain active communication with the electorate. The final decisions regarding the replacement of provincial and district heads will depend entirely on the conclusions drawn by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after reviewing these comprehensive reports.
If President Erdogan forms a conviction in favor of change based on the data provided, the party will officially launch the search for new leadership in the designated provinces and districts.
Eight provincial heads already replaced
The urgency of this restructuring is highlighted by recent events within the party's hierarchy. Despite the fact that the new administration took office less than a year ago—following the 8th Ordinary Congress held last February—the party has already replaced eight provincial heads. This rapid turnover underscores the leadership's low tolerance for underperformance in the current political climate.
Tracking membership dynamics and feedback
In addition to evaluating the leadership, the AK Party's Organization Presidency is closely monitoring the grassroots level. New directives have been issued to provincial and district organizations prioritizing the acquisition of new party members. The progress of these membership drives is being tracked meticulously.
Furthermore, the party is taking a proactive approach to address member attrition. Individuals who have recently terminated their AK Party membership are being contacted individually by phone. The purpose of these calls is to understand the specific reasons behind their departure.
The feedback gathered from these calls is categorized. Issues that can be resolved locally are addressed immediately. However, unresolved problems and systemic complaints are directly factored into the performance evaluations of the respective provincial and district heads. This feedback loop ensures that local leaders are held accountable for the satisfaction and retention of the party's base.
