The story of Infantry Specialist Sergeant Hüseyin Cankaya is one of quiet dedication and ultimate sacrifice. Born and raised in the small village of Yeniköy in Kütahya's Simav district, the 28-year-old commando's journey of service to his homeland concluded on May 24, 2022, on the front lines of Operation Claw-Lock in northern Iraq. More than three years later, his legacy as a devoted soldier and a beloved son of his community continues to be honored, proving that a hero’s memory is eternal.
From a Village in Simav to the Commando Brigades
Hüseyin Cankaya spent his childhood and formative years in Yeniköy, a village in the Simav district of Kütahya. After completing his education, he joined the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), choosing the difficult path of a professional commando. Throughout his career, he served in various security and safety missions along Turkey's borders and in cross-border operations. Those who knew him from his hometown and family circles remember him for his "calm demeanor, strong sense of duty, and deep devotion to his family." This quiet strength would define his service to the nation.
The Final Mission on the Zap Front Line
In 2022, Specialist Sergeant Cankaya was deployed to northern Iraq as part of Operation Claw-Lock, a comprehensive military campaign targeting terrorist hideouts, supply lines, and infiltration routes in the Zap, Metina, and Avashin-Basyan regions. The operation was designed to permanently neutralize the threat of terrorist elements on Turkey’s border. On May 24, 2022, during a mission in the Zap region, his unit made contact with terrorists. In the ensuing firefight, Hüseyin Cankaya was martyred. Official announcements from the Ministry of National Defence confirmed his name among those who had made the ultimate sacrifice that day, sending waves of grief from the front lines to his homes in Kütahya and Izmir.
A Hero's Farewell in His Hometown
After a military ceremony in Hakkâri, the body of Martyr Cankaya was brought to his hometown of Yeniköy. He was bid a final farewell by his family, comrades-in-arms, local dignitaries, and a large crowd of citizens. A separate ceremony was also held in front of his family’s home in Bornova, Izmir. At 28 years old, he was laid to rest in the Yeniköy village cemetery, completing his final duty to the homeland he had sworn to protect. The immense grief at his funeral was matched only by the pride felt for his honorable service and sacrifice.
A Legacy That Lives On in Education
The memory of Hüseyin Cankaya is honored and preserved by those he left behind. Family and friends describe him as "quiet, dignified, and unhesitating when it came to his duty."
